Basic texturing skills tutorial

This tutorial is for beginners

This tutorial will show how to make a metal road plate from scratch. Below are the two base textures needed (tarmac & metal)

Step 1

I'm using paintshop pro but all paint programs have the same features so use what ever program you use. I opened the two textures needed. I then turned on grids so everthing can be created nicely and evenly spaced.

I used a black rectangle shape to create evenly space bars like you see in the below sequence

Step 2

It's looking rather flat so we need to add lighting to give depth. Create a new layer, we will use this to make highlights on the metal. I used a normal paint brush and painted white lines on the insides of the metal bars giving the illusion that the light source is coming from the left, see below

I then lowered the opacity of the layer to about 40% as the highlights I created were too strong. See below...looking better

Step 3

I then copied the metal onto the tarmac. As you can see it looks flat and superimposed on the tarmac

I needed to create some lighting to make it look like it was on the tarmac. So as the metal plate is embedded in the road, the road surface will be slightly higher than the metal plate. This will cause a slight shadow on the plate. So we will make this shadow to make it more believable.

On a new layer I created a black line on the inside of the metal plate going all the way around like so

I then blurred the line and lowered the opacity of the layer. It's subtle but it helps

Step 3

Now all we do is the finishing touches. As you can see the texture is to clean and perfect. I took the burn tool and darkened random areas around the metal plate as you can see is the below series of images
